They recognised the dark controlling powers behind empire, the legalism that spins the lie that once saved by grace we must be sanctified by law, and the superstitions and ungodly cultural norms that give us a measure of freedom to express our faith, but delineates false boundaries for it's expression. The cross, so understood, reminds us of the need to confront these 'powers' wherever we find them, and bring into experiential reality the victory of the cross.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1833853791737234794.post-38704768189070338962011-07-19T22:54:32.314+01:002011-07-19T22:54:32.314+01:00Hi Dave - thanks for posting. I was blessed and rejuvinated for leading the following Sunday. I'm thoroughly enjoying your book, its insights are very relevant to where I'm trying to grow both myself and the worship team here in St Annes.

Our church is in interregnum at the moment, and there are a few people pushing for people to become less of an audience and more of a disciple. Hopefully we'll all be ready to take the risk and step out. I know that light will greet us when we do!

God bless,
Dave
http://blog.magical.org.ukDave Lowryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02266928542745908179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1833853791737234794.post-14016424121287009862011-01-05T12:50:28.571+00:002011-01-05T12:50:28.571+00:00Hello John, nice and long article. I like the quote from Luther.

Seems to me there is a real need to dismantle the 'law' that is holding so many Christians I meet in impotent bondage.John de Jonghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12746982921393537433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1833853791737234794.post-79375872881825482262010-10-12T20:14:51.751+01:002010-10-12T20:14:51.751+01:00One of the less valuable legacies of some aspects ...One of the less valuable legacies of some aspects of modern evangelicalism is an inconsistent theology of grace. We are saved by grace - God's free unmerited favour in Christ. But then it seems we are expected to be sanctified by law. True enough, Jesus and the NT writers talk about appropriate behaviour, some of which is absolute (we don't lie, steal, murder etc) and some of which is good advice if we all want to get along together (if you invite a consciencious tea-totaller to dinner, keep the wine in the seller).

But the defining principle in our behaviour is not law - a list of stuff I should and shouldn't do - but grace. It's grace that teaches us what to say no to, grace that equips us for service, grace that gives us the confidence to live holy and productive lives before God, and grace that makes us what we are.

Grace changes the rules of the game from what I have to do, to what I want to do. Luther supposedly put it in these terms: "Love God and do as you like" and Tree63 "..whatever you want I want it to."

Grace changes the question from asking where the boundaries are to what has Christ set me free to be.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1833853791737234794.post-51191139057405295612010-10-08T22:17:39.624+01:002010-10-08T22:17:39.624+01:00Glad you enjoyed it, Milan. I really appreciate you sharing these tho...Hi John,
I really appreciate you sharing these thoughts. I feel as though you and I are walking along together (though many miles apart) and you seem to be able articulate some of my own struggles and wonderings (if that's a word).

To use your analogy of "where do you live", my answer is something like a halfway house. I say that because I feel like I can rest here, but it doesn't quite feel like home.

My wife & I have found a great fellowship here in Texas and they are somewhat open to things. I haven't analyzed the theology just yet, but they do allow some freedom for just about anyone to express something that one believes that one hears from the Lord. It's refreshing that they put such an emphasis on relationship, but my perspective on the leadership is, well... I guess I haven't figured them out. I suppose it would probably be more appropriate for me to say that I haven't yet figured out where I fit in or near the leadership there... or if I fit.

I'm just pushing in areas where I'm able to help (i.e. sound reinforcement, website, communications) and seeing what the reactions are. Mind you, I'm not pushing out of malice, but rather more for the reason that people tend towards rest (the law of inertia) and it takes a force greater than the force of the body at rest to cause that body to begin to move.

So, thank you for your writings. I look forward to reading more.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06644879660806591710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1833853791737234794.post-49538031133732799552010-10-07T08:20:01.117+01:002010-10-07T08:20:01.117+01:00Hello John, thanks for this post.
